The Desire of Love in “A Mercy”

â€Å"Love is the powerful want to be wanted compellingly. † †Robert Frost The origination of adoration all through the novel changes definitely from guiltless to a feeling of abandonment. The manner in which Florence gives her affection for the metalworker outlines to the peruser her freshness with the feeling. Love was a really troublesome subject to compose on account of the way that the novel was described by such huge numbers of various characters from start to finish. The incongruity based on adoration is was fundamentally the way that the metal forger doesn’t feel a similar route for Florence as she feels for him.Later on in the novel I saw lastly comprehended the title of the novel â€Å"A Mercy. † It was basically a direct result of the Love of a human. Shown in the finishing up passages Morrison states â€Å"It was not a supernatural occurrence. Presented by God. It was a leniency. Offered by a human. † Love is regularly characterized as an extraordinary sentiment of profound love, and the manner in which Florence communicated her adoration for the metalworker stressed her childhood in age as well as with the feeling itself. Florence gave steady indications of desirously and sharpness since she had the option to deal with such affection. She was normally severe with the idea of her mom parting with her when she was more youthful, not knowing the purpose behind her mother’s objective choice. One way Florence demonstrated her desirously was the point at which the metalworker embraced a little youngster and started giving him more consideration than he gave Florence. Florence, overwhelm by desirously and rage got into a physical fight with the little youngster and at long last wound up breaking the child’s arm. Florence says in part 9 that she didn’t attempt to hurt the youthful fellow, she basically needed him to quit crying, yet she additionally proceeds to state how she heard his shoulder break howe ver proceeded in any case (164).This is the thing that drives me to believe that it was done out of her desirously and rage and not by different less unsafe methods. The episode not just caused a colossal question among her and the metalworker however it likewise anticipated to the peruser that Florence couldn't acknowledge the way that the smithy could show love for another person, other than her. â€Å"You see the kid down and accept terrible about me beyond a shadow of a doubt? † (165) Florence broadly expounds talking about how the metalworker came into the room and his prompt supposition that was that Florence had planned something for hurt the boy.The extract that I think hurt Florence the most (165) was the point at which he said to her â€Å"You are only wild. No requirement. No brain. † Basically disclosing to Florence she is as wild as an open air creature and can’t control herself or her feelings. Like a little child Florence pines for freedom and con sideration however yet from the exercises that Florence experienced from before, she likewise fears abandonment. As I expressed previously, Florence and the metal forger got into a physical quarrel and the metalworker wound up striking Florence and he deserted her by advising her to leave the nearness of him and his received son.Not just did the smithy mean to hurt Florence truly however he likewise endeavored to hurt her verbally on the grounds that after her advised her to leave his quality her considered her a (166) â€Å"slave by decision in both kid and psyche. † In the novel Morrison looks at this feeling of surrender to that of a natural inclination Florence felt when she was surrendered during childbirth. Realizing that that occasion terrified Florence adversely forever, it truly enables the peruser to feel the fierceness of the enthusiastic exciting ride Florence is feeling now in the novel knowing she simply lost a man she gave it a second thought so profoundly abou t.The love Florence has/had for the metal forger soon des and go basically to disdain since she still can’t understand the slip-up she made in harming Malik. Indeed as I would like to think the metalworker wasn't right for striking her yet she was to some degree fortunate that that was everything he did. (184) Later, on in section 11 Florence explains more on her end cites in part 9 which was â€Å"the hooks scratch and scratch until the sledge is in my hand† (167).But in part 11 Florence gets into another tussle with the metal forger (184) in which she hits him with a mallet and cuts him seriously with tongs before she flees. Transcendentalism Essay - 1545 Words

Research Skills Paper – Transcendentalism Introduction: The transcendentalism movement first came to be in the mid-19th century as a rebellious reaction to the Age of Reason, illustrated by Thomas Paine, and an overall conformist mindset in their rational way of thinking. Primarily started in New England, Ralph Waldo Emerson was a key component in this new philosophical era of intuitive, spiritual thinking. His unique style of literature (such as Self-Reliance and The American Scholar) as well as Henry David Thoreau’s Walden brought objective ideas into the open, while critiquing the general state of intellectualism and spirituality at the time. The core of the values of transcendentalism can be stemmed from a mix of Hindu teachings and†¦show more content†¦To be great is to be misunderstood† (Emerson, 63). In this quote, you can analyze that Emerson knew that the idea of this type of thinking would not come so effortlessly to people and there would be objectivity. However, others would join him and the ones who did would stick to their new belief rather than going back to their original ways just because people did not agree with them. An example of this would be the author, Henry David Thoreau, a friend of Emerson’s and his book Walden. Instead of writing a book that speculated on the meaning of life, he was hoping to know it from experience. He did this by escaping to a place of true introspection, by living in a cabin a couple kilometers from Concord, Massachusetts along Walden Pond for two years. He continued Emerson proposed ideology by living it himself in a place where he considered to commune with nature and be completely self-reliant. He writes, â€Å"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not when I came to die, discover I had not lived† (Thoreau, 22). Thoreau achieved this value of transcendentalism by promoting peace and harmony beyond on eself and found himself engulfed in a spiritual journey without modern conveniences and traditions of conformity life. Marketing Report Development for Starbucks Company- myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theMarketing Report Development for Starbucks Company. Answer: Introduction Starbucks is a coffee company based in Seattle, America, with the mission of inspiring and nurturing the human kind. From the very tome of its inception, Starbucks has been a company of one of a kind. It had created a unique brand identity and image for being more successful within the global market. The company has been capable of differentiating itself in the competitive environment through different strategies. The company has always been priding itself for the assurance of quality of its products along with a distinct brand marketing strategy (Armstrong et al., 2015). The organization has always made their fine quality products speaking for themselves. This marketing report will do and internal and environmental analysis for the organization to find out the strategic intent of Starbucks. Environmental Analysis Considering the global environment of Starbucks, political factors can be very much significant for Starbucks as the rules and regulations of the countries they business with for the raw materials. The continuing international economic recession is also another factor that can affect the business of Starbucks that the company always has to deal with the rising operational and labor costs on a global level (Strauss, 2016). The rising frequency of startups can also be a huge social threat for the company. The changing patterns of work, food preferences and family patterns can also affect the business environment. However, the emerging mobile waves have helped the company to attract more customers. SWOT Analysis Strength As stated by Harrington et al. (2017) as a brand, Starbucks tends to occupy majority of the coffee industry. The brand image is quite strong due to its innovative marketing strategy such as their prominent logo and rigorous advertising campaign. It should be noted that the company mostly spends a little amount of money for their media promotions and they tend to focus on expanding the numbers of stores. Therefore it is nearly difficult for the customers to look for any substitutions. The brand is nearly present at every corner. Starbucks also utilizes their customers promoting for them while holding a drink in their hand. Weakness According to Palmer, Simmons Mason (2014) a major weakness of the brand is that it does not really have many products other than coffee. Starbucks is trying quite hard, but it has not been much successful yet. Another major weakness of the brand is the high price. There are a large section of consumers who may not opt for the brand for saving money. Starbucks also has huge lines in the peak hours. Also, Starbucks is mostly dependent on the U.S market other than any other country. Opportunities Starbucks has expanded the product lines in recent times. As indicated by Atwal Williams (2017) they are also opting for more products other than the tea and coffee. Starbucks has started promoting the food items such as brunch or breakfast foods other than the strict stereotypical coffees. Starbucks also offers happy hour facilities as money saving options for the customers. The organization should extend such deals more, so that they can attract more customers while they expand to different countries other than the European vicinity. Threats One of the major threats of Starbucks is the competitors in the market. There are several organizations such as Dunkin Donuts, Tim Hortons, Keurig give tough competition to the brand in the global market (Schlegelmilch, 2016). There is another issue that can be a significant threat to the brand is that the heath precautions that the doctors say regarding caffeine addition. The cost of coffee beans is also rising to a great extent which can make their products more expensive with the course of time. Strategic Intent: From the above analysis, it can be found out that Starbucks has to deal with the customer knowledge more. The brand should be more consumer-centric and provide more customized products. Consumer Behavior The alternative marketing strategy will target the behavior of the customers on the basis of their emotional connection, functionality which have a huge impact on the brand decision of the customers. As indicated by Vsquez Escamilla (2014) there are several times while people decide on brands on the basis of their social status and personality. As the products of Starbucks are quite expensive, it tends to provide a sense of higher social status to the consumers. Therefore, Starbucks can come up with cheaper products that are for all the customer segments. STP Strategy Starbucks tend to divide their customer base in different segments, where now the brand will focus more on the behavioral and demographic segments. According to Hsu (2014) the demographic segment is quite important to the brand as it can drive the consumers to a specific life style. Most of the times are consumers are the ones from higher income groups and come from an enjoyable environment. The brand also provides a social status to the customers. Therefore Starbucks can provide a positive attitude to the customers. Considering the targeting strategy, the brand can use undifferentiated marketing strategy by ignoring the primary differences of the market segments and target the entire market with their offers. Therefore this strategy can be applicable to all segments and will be easier to promote the brand (Tuan, 2014). Therefore, Starbucks can also position the brand as a life style brand in the global market. However, they can also provide cheaper products and pull off their new marketing strategy based on the needs and taste of people. Marketing Mix Products The Starbucks products are already considered to be good quality ones, yet expensive. However the brand can initiate few products that come under the budget (Taecharungroj, 2016). They can offer more variations in their convenience products. Price The existing pricing strategy of the brand is a combination of pricing based on competition and cost. However the brand can initiate a new pricing strategy which is comparatively cheaper, therefore more products can be sold to a larger market segment. Place Starbucks should promote their products out of the European and American countries. More stores in such countries can be very helpful for the brand (Vsquez Escamilla, 2014). The brand is mostly dependent on the American customers, however they should move out of the vicinity. Promotion Starbucks already has rigorous promotional strategies, but with a new product line, they should spend more money on the media consumption. The organization should use both the online and print media for advertising their brand and creating an identity (Strauss, 2016). During specific time of the year, the company should also come up with large discounts which will bring more customers to the brand. Such promotional strategies can bring Starbucks closer to their target customers. Metrics For the new marketing strategy, the brand should also be monitoring the particular outcomes. Starbucks should monitor the sales growth of the year after they implement the strategy to different stores across the world. The brand could also utilize its social media metrics to overview the reaction of the customers after they implement the new marketing strategy and their product line. Conclusion Starbucks has already implemented great marketing strategies; however the brand should now extend their product lines to target a greater customer segment. Starbucks can also bring up some promotional events and offer more discounts in their stores so that they can also attract customers from middle income group. Other than that, they can also stretch their product lines by putting more seasonal flavors in their product line. Therefore this marketing report has detailed the marketing strategy and recommended potential strategies for the brand. By expanding their product line and numbers of store, the brand can reach to a larger number of customers as well. Reference list Armstrong, G., Kotler, P., Harker, M., Brennan, R. Thomas Jefferson Essays (602 words) - Thomas Jefferson,

Thomas Jefferson Essay on Jefferson Jefferson had destroyed political traditions. From his contradictions and defecting his priciples, Jefferson destroyed the political precedent and is a exemplatory hypocrite, which can be seen throughout his administration. Jefferson was an admired statesman who was grappling unsuccessfully with the moral issue of slavery. Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, opposed slavery his whole life, yet he never freed his own slaves. He championed Enlightenment principles, yet never freed himself of the prejudices of his soceity. Jefferson was extremely hypocritical in the issue of slavery. Jefferson was a plantation owner early in his life, and had slaves working for him throughout his life. Jefferson had tolerated while he didn't accept others who owned slaves. Jefferson denounced the slave owners, while he was owning and using slaves. Although Jefferson was supposedly a good slave owner, his hypocritical nature made him accuse others not to own slaves while he, himself was owning slaves. Another part of the hypocrisy was that Jefferson believed that the slaves were dependent upon the white man, while he, himself was dependent upon the slaves. Jefferson also was hypocritcal in his acquisition of the Loisiana territory. In Jeffersonian principles, large expansive governments were bad, and small was good. This was a antithesis of that principle. Jefferson knew that the acquisition of the Loisiana territory was beneficial to the welfare of the U.S. According to the constitution, nowhere in the constitution is the acquisition of land a right of the government, Jeffersons' predisposition was to strictly go by the constitution (as seen with the national bank controversy), this is another contradiction during his administration. Since the appropriation of the Lousiana territory was important for the expansion of the united states, he temporarily dismissed his principles, therefore destroying political traditions. Another hypocritical event during Jeffersons' administration was his acceptance of the National Bank. Early in Jefferson's political career, Jefferson had debated with Hamilton on whether to have the National Bank. "When this government was first established, it was possible to have kept it going on true principles, but the contracted, English, half-lettured ideas of Hamilton destroyed that hope in the bud, We can pay off his debts in 15 years." Early in Jefferson's Administration, Jefferson had denounced the National Bank. At the end of his administration, Jefferson realized that the National Bank was important and this is hypocritical by disregarding his principles. The Burr conspiracy depicted Jefferson as a ruthless, and a individual who will do anything inorder to achieve his goal. Jefferson championed civil liberties and unalienable rights. Yet, Jefferson violated civil liberties by coercing witnesses, arrested with out habeus corpus and prosecuting in a "court" of his own. Jefferson and Jeffersonians are hypocrites from the start and they destroyed political tradition as seen during Jeffersons' administration. Jeffersonians show an immense amount of hypocritism in their policies. For example, Federalists had supported high tarriffs, inorder to protect national manufacturers and american industry. The tarriffs were a vital determinent, which kept the economy of the United States viable. The Jeffersonians, not the Federalists began the American system of protecting american industry which initially was a major constituent of the federalist platform.

Ogdens Basic English - Definitions and Discussion

Ogdens Basic English - Definitions and Discussion Definition Basic English is a version of the English language made simple by limiting the number of its words to 850, and by cutting down the rules for using them to the smallest number necessary for the clear statement of ideas (I.A. Richards, Basic English and Its Uses, 1943).Basic English was developed by British linguist Charles Kay Ogden (Basic English, 1930) and was intended as a medium of international communication. For this reason it has also been called Ogdens Basic English.BASIC is a backronym for British American Scientific International Commercial (English). Although interest in Basic English declined after the 1930s and early 1940s, it relates in some ways to the work carried out by contemporary researchers in the field of English as a lingua franca. For examples of texts that have been translated into Basic English, visit the website of Ogdens Basic English.   See Examples and Observations below. Also see: Controlled EnglishEnglish as a Lingua FrancaGlobal EnglishGlobishNew RhetoricPlain English Examples and Observations Basic English, though it has only 850 words, is still normal English. It is limited in its words and its rules, but it keeps to the regular forms of English. And though it is designed to give the learner as little trouble as possible, it is no more strange to the eyes of my readers than these lines, which are in fact in Basic English. . . .The second point to make clear is that even with so small a word list and so simple a structure it is possible to say in Basic English anything needed for the general purpose of everyday existence . . ..The third most important point about Basic is that it is not merely a list of words, governed by a minimum apparatus of essential English grammar, but a highly organized system designed throughout to be as easy as possible for a learner who is totally ignorant of English or of any related language. . . .(I.A. Richards, Basic English and Its Uses, Kegan Paul, 1943) The Grammar of Basic English[C.K. Ogden argued that] there are very few basic operatio ns hiding behind the very large number of verbs in the normal standard language. Not only can most of the so-called verbs in the language be circumlocuted by phrases such as have a desire for  and put a question, but such circumlocutions represent a truer meaning than the fictions (want, ask) that they replace. This insight prompted Ogden into devising a kind of notional grammar of English in which everything could be expressed by translating it into terms of relationships between Things (with or without modifying Qualities) and Operations. The principal practical benefit was to reduce the number of lexical verbs to a small handful of operational items. In the end he decided on only fourteen (come, get, give, go, keep, let, make, put, seem, take, do, say, see, and send) plus two auxiliaries (be and have) and two modals (will and may). The propositional content of any statement can be expressed in a sentence containing only these operators.(A.P.R. Howatt and H.G. Widdowson,  A Hi story of English Language Teaching, 2nd ed. Oxford University Press, 2004) Weaknesses of Basic EnglishBasic has three weaknesses: (1) It cannot be a world auxiliary language, an avenue into standard English, and a reminder of the virtues of plain usage at one and the same time. (2) Its dependence on operators and combinations produces circumlocutions at times unacceptable in standard English . . .. (3) The Basic words, mainly common, short words like get, make, do, have some of the widest ranges of meaning in the language and may be among the most difficult to learn adequately.(Tom McArthur, The Oxford Companion to the English Language, Oxford University Press, 1992) Also Known As: BASIC, Ogdens Basic English

Detail three differences of the colonies listed in the chapter 1 and 2 Assignment

Detail three differences of the colonies listed in the chapter 1 and 2 - Assignment Example They relied on ship-building due to the sturdy pines that existed there. Also their economy was largely supported by fishing. People increasingly clustered around the coastal regions and built farm lands for promoting agriculture. Their institution of extreme importance was their church which overlooked their morality – this colony was formed mainly for religious purposes (Remini 21). The Middle colony mainly relied on farming and commerce; agriculture thrived in this region because of the climatic conditions and several animals were used to provide fur for export. The fur was actually what the Dutch colonists had shown interest in initially. The fur was not only exported to Europe but also to Southern colonies and West Indies. The culture of this region was especially diverse due to the presence of Dutch, Germans and several other nations. Though some regions of this area were predominantly occupied for religious reasons, a larger portion of this area was colonized for exploiting the natural and material treasures of this land (Remini 21). The Southern colony largely relied on the cultivation of crops and agriculture, with enormous lands reserved for serving this purpose and an enormous workforce requirement. Initially, the workforce comprised largely of indentured servants, which were soon replaced by African slaves. Southern colonies were the first to recognize and institutionalize slavery. Vast social class differences were present in this colony between the natives and the colonists. On the whole, the population of this region was more homogenous than Middle and New England Colonies (Remini 22). Inspite of these differences, all three regions established governance structures based on whether the region was royal, corporate or proprietary. Continuous evolution, colonization and disregard for rules often brought the three colonies into clashes, which eventually

High School Conformism Essay Example for Free

High School Conformism Essay Throughout majority of my high school life, I always questioned why things operated the way they did. Being forced to go to a place, or my parents could possibly go to jail. To be honest it sort of felt like a indoctrination. Going there I noticed everything was controlled and different social groups where created based on different peoples personalities. The irony of it all is that from a young age school seemed to indorse individuality, yet hypocritical policies such as school uniforms still took place later in the years. I questioned why there was so much conformity;why was everyone so worried about fitting in? While I cant be the voice for every-ones reasoning behind peer pressure. I can give my own reason for occasionally feelings of peer pressure. The first 2 years of high school felt very much like a fight for my individuality. Id find multiple ways to make myself feel as if I was different; for instance making modifications to my uniform. I also would follow subculture Stereotypes, although at the time I didnt realize it was simple was pressure: The pressure to pull away from what I considered social emptiness. This was a phase thankfully, and thankfully I slowly I began to realize; I was essentially doing what other students where doing, but strangely for the opposite reasoning(to get away from conformism). Id say its a great learning experience, and simply put. The best way to strive for individuality is not striving for individuality. When you force yourself to be different, weather it be following a subculture (beyond your own personal beliefs), or not liking a ideology without doing your own research. Youll definitely fall into the ignorance of conformism. After coming to these conclusions, I decided to become more social; experiencing new things so I could have a opinion, rather than stagnate in ignorance. Ive learned a lot in regards to life, but most importantly I learned a lot about myself. I can finally say that I am a individual. I believe high school has definitely had a impact on me, although I’m sure it wasnt there intention to give me such enlightenment.

Preventing Bioterrorism Essay -- Biodefense, Biological Attack

September 11, 2001, signifies the most pivotal moment in United States history. It marks a great paradigm shift in the attitude of United States towards terrorism. Prior to September 11, policies to protect against terrorism were perforated with in fighting between government agencies, a lack of centralized intelligence sharing, and general surprise. This event marks the beginning of the largest growth in the United States intelligence community. The United States increased security all around the board, opened up and centralized its agencies, and began to prepare for new kinds of terrorist attacks. The country never experienced a bio-terrorist attack, and yet the threat is very real. From the Cold War, the United States fully understood the harm biological weapons can inflict. The attacks of September 11 demonstrate the preparation against domestic terrorist attacks and the damage terrorist can cause. As the United States continue to increase its security against terrorism, it is imperative it understands and prepares for a potential bio-terrorist attack. There are many events throughout which demonstrate the potential catastrophe a calculated bio-terrorist attack can create. The Black Death of the 14th century illustrates how quickly and how deadly a disease can spread. The plague originated in China and arrived via trade routes to Europe by the mid-14th century. By the end of the 14th century, the disease killed more than half the world’s population. The world witnessed its first case of biological warfare during the French and Indian Wars. British commander of the North America forces, Sir Jeffrey Amherst, ordered his troops to donate to Native Americans blankets infested with smallpox. As result, Native Ame... ...emonstrated the silent nature of such attacks and the damages they can exact on large populations. The plagues of the 14th century, the use of smallpox against the Indians, and the intentional Salmonella poisoning in the 1980’s exemplify this fact. The fall of the Soviet Union in the 1990’s along with other political events, resulted in vast amounts of bio-agents disappearing and falling into the wrong hands. Opponents claim it is too complex and requires too many resources to carry out large scale attacks; however, with biological weapons, a few infected people can spread the disease to thousands. The modern tactics of terrorism are unconventional, unexpected, and able to kill thousands. As terrorists become more organized and funded, it is essential that the United States increase its capabilities at preventing and defending against bio-terrorist attacks.

Racial Ethnic And Religious Profiling in the U.S. Essay

In the United States, ‘The land of the Free’, racial profiling of minority groups seems all too common. Many Americans believe that law enforcement as well as many other people often discriminates on minority groups simply because of their color of their skin. Civil rights activist and many leaders of minority groups are pressuring Enforcement agencies to eliminate racial and ethnic profiling during traffic stops and supposed random pedestrian stops. However, many law enforcement representatives claim that the complaints about these activities are overstated and are simply in the heads of the accusers. As a nation with a history of racial slavery and racial segregation, particularly towards any group that is not Anglo-American or fair skinned, African-Americans have long complained of racial profiling. Although racial slavery has been over for over one hundred years, and segregation that ended over fifty years ago, there is still tension between many people over race. Hispanics and Muslims are two other ethnic groups that feel the racial profiling, often being suspected of being terrorists or being illegal immigrants. Racial profiling is not a new subject in America. Racial profiling dates back to the colonial days in America. The revolutionary era there was religious profiling of Quakers because they were seen as being unfaithful to the revolution. African Americans have been racially profiled since the days of Slavery. Mexicans and Latinos have been scrutinized and called out by law enforcement since around the time Texas gained its independence. 19th century immigration laws created ethnic and racial profiling against Asians and southern and eastern Europeans. In August of 1777 the Continental Congress ordered the arrests of multiple Quakers that were supposedly disloyal to the Revolution. The Continental Congress had no evidence, and there were no trials. Many of the prisoners were exiled to a Virginia jail. The captives were released from the imprisonment because of pleas from their families and from a few political leaders. During the Pre-Civil War era African-Americans made up about one sixth of the country’s population. The majority of those African-Americans were slaves, with the majority of them slaves in the South. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 had only a few things that protected actual free African-Americans. Slave hunters could legally capture the slaves that were able to escape. Free African-Americans had almost no immunity from being captured and treated as if they were runaway slaves. The new movie â€Å"12 Years a Slave† that recently came out in theatres shows how a free black man could be captured and sold into slavery without being able to prove their freedom, because of profiling any African-American as a slave. The end of slavery did not end the profiling of African-Americans. The Jim Crow era made segregation legal and seemingly right because of laws. The Jim Crow laws reinforced the belief that African-Americans were inferior to whites. Any African-Americans accused of committing a crime could be subject to unjust treatment by law enforcement and even unfair trials in court. One of the most heinous acts of racial profiling was the threat of racist vigilantes. According to the Tuskegee Institute, more than three thousand four hundred African-Americans were lynched from 1880 to 1950. Mexicans and Mexican-Americans were also victim to racial profiling since the days of the annexation of Texas from Mexico. In 1845 the Texas Rangers were formed and served as the nations first statewide police organization. According to the University of Texas’ del Carmen, the Texas Rangers committed many â€Å"brutal acts against Comanche tribes and thousands of Mexicans†. Many Mexican-Americans throughout the southwest United States and throughout most of Texas suffered from the same kind of racial segregation as African-Americans. In the 1930’s nearly 2 million Mexican-Americans were forced and aggressively pressured to leave the United States. In the late 19th century Federal immigration laws portrayed racial profiling by the national government. In 1875 one of the first Federal Immigration laws banned the entry of the country to many undesired Asian immigrants brought to the United States for forced labor and prostitution. In 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act banned all immigration of Chinese laborers. Decades later the United States government put in action literacy tests to gain citizenship that were swayed to only help Europeans and not Asians or Latinos. On February 19th 1942 one of the most well known acts of racial profiling was committed. Under an executive order of president Franklin D. Roosevelt, the president ordered the internment of over 110,000 people mostly of Japanese descent following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The federal government believed that anyone of Japanese descent could be a threat to national security. Hundreds of thousands of innocent honest American citizens were forced into internment baffles me, considering that the government would never do that to White German-American citizens even though the main enemy of World War 2 was Germany. In the late 20th century racial and ethnic profiling became an important issue in the public eye. The African-American civil rights movement embodied the desire of African-Americans to be treated equally socially and under the treatment of law. After the Civil Rights movements, African-Americans and other minorities were being treated more fairly but still falling victim to racial profiling. The FBI and DEA perfected the â€Å"formal† art of racial profiling in the 1970’s. The DEA created a â€Å"profile† for supposed drug traffickers, which targeted African-Americans and people of Hispanic descent. The list of characteristics gave agents the right to randomly stop and search people matching the profile; legal racial profiling. In 1989 the Supreme Court granted permission to use those characteristics as probable cause to stop and search someone. Throughout the 1990’s racial profiling was an epidemic with law enforcement stops in the United States. Statistics show that African-Americans were the great majority of police drug stops. In Maryland during 1995, a man with the last name Wilkins filed a lawsuit against law enforcement to uncover hard evidence that African-Americans were being unfairly profiled. After a thorough investigation of the Maryland law enforcement, a state police â€Å"Criminal Intelligence Report† showed that there was a explicit profile for targeting African-Americans. The investigation actually uncovered that African-Americans were 72 percent of the stops made in the state. After the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001 there was a new group in the United States being racially profiled, Middle Easterners and Muslims. The federal government, as well as the many of the American public became suspicious of anyone of Middle Eastern descent or anyone who practiced the Muslim religion. Although the vast majority of Muslims are peaceful, many people as well as law enforcement began to racially profile them as â€Å"terrorist†. Even African-Americans and Latinos began to scrutinize innocent Middle Easterners. Although President George W. Bush promised to help end racial profiling because it was unconstitutional, following 9/11 the law enforcement began to profile even more than ever. The government focused on Arab Nationals and anyone who could possible have links to the terrorist group Al Qaeda. Immigration Authorities began rounding up hundreds of Middle Easterners for thorough questioning. Although they denied it, Airport screeners began giving special attention to anyone who appeared to be of Middle Eastern or Arabic descent. In 2003 the Bush administration issued a Racial Profiling guideline that stated racial profiling is okay as long as it is related to National Security. In 2008 the Barrack Obama administration and critics of racial profiling began to push for more legislation to prevent racial profiling. Being the first African-American President, it seemed as if times were changing as far as racial profiling stands in the United States. In 2009 the murder of African-American teenager Trayvon Martin griped the nation. The murder was a pure case of racial profiling by a vigilante in a predominantly white neighborhood. Martin’s murder George Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watchman was suspicious of Martin walking around his neighbor hood one evening. Zimmerman armed with his handgun, began stalking Martin and eventually confronted Martin, even though police dispatchers told Zimmerman not to. On Zimmerman’s 911 call he used racial slurs and clearly profiled Martin as a criminal because he was African-American. Eventually Zimmerman confronted Martin, the two got into a scuffle, and Zimmerman shot and killed the unarmed teen. After years of trial, the jury eventually acquitted Zimmerman of the murder charge claiming it was â€Å"self defense† even though Law enforcement told Zimmerman to not follow Martin and Zimmerman did anyways. The Trayvon martin murder is still a current issue that has the nation divided. After doing extensive research on the topic of Racial Profiling in the United States I have learned a lot about how far back and diverse racial profiling is. I believe that there will always be racial profiling as long as there are multiple races living in one country. Racial Profiling is simply human nature and cannot be undone by making laws or legislation. People subconsciously profile individuals based on their individual history and knowledge. People say â€Å"I don’t see color† but the fact of the matter is, everyone sees color. Even the victims of racial profiling are guilty of racially profiling others; whether or not they say it out loud people still think it. The only thing people can do is try there best to not act upon their assumptions of others based on race, and try their best to treat everyone equally regardless of what you may think initially. Its like the old saying, â€Å"Don’t Judge a book by its cover†.

The first personality was that of Jennifer Thompson Cannino. She was the protagonist of this memoir. She comes out vividly as the epitome of both grace and strength as she narrates and shares with the world her horrific ordeal as a young innocent and low-key profile college student. She recounts the reader how she was raped at knifepoint in the dead of the night at her apartments. She speaks of her memories so vivid regarding the physical characteristic and features of the man who attacked her (Thompson-Cannino, Cotton and Toneo 20)The memoir is of a scorned woman who despite the shame and bad taste that was left in her life emerged stronger than the tragedy. She is an illustration of the proverbial a glass half full as opposed to a glass half empty. She turned her misfortune into a best seller. Ronald first forgave himself making him better and stronger enough to forgive the woman who turned him into a guest of the state for eleven years.

My Letter At Howard University - 868 Words

Where did God fit inside the equation, and how would all these elements shape His Plan: my husband, my supervisor, my transformed ambition to enroll into college, my college professors, and my career job choices? There I stood, without a college degree, inside the office of my supervisor, an astute college professor, and the Department’s Chairperson. I left the Law School (in March 1998) and got a new job upon main campus. I worked inside the School of Education, Department of Educational Administration Policy (EAP) at Howard University. I worked as the only liaison between graduate students, the Department Chairperson, and seven other faculty professors. At the beginning of the fall semester 1998, my boss, and I exchanged educational views concerning the economical advantages linked to a college degree. He suggested that I seek out a college education – same thing my husband recommended (in the previous chapter). Since I was in my mid-thirties, I said, â €Å"I’m too old to get a college degree.† My boss replied, â€Å"How old would you be if you didn’t get it?† His cajole statement tickled my curiosity, and I explored how higher education could be a beneficial payback -- especially at my age. After surfing the Internet, I delved deeper into college education topics, and presto! I hit a gold mine. I discovered that â€Å"higher education† has various meanings depending upon the individuals and their demographic area. Questions: Scenario OneJoanna Spring always insisted that she did not ever want to be kept alive by machines, and even stated that when she was a young teenager. Her parents understood her feelings on the subject. Joanna married Bill Spring and one month later, was involved in an auto accident which left her in a persistent vegetative state. Joannas parents (Mr. and Mrs. John Winters) have sued to have Joanna taken off life support. Joannas husband refused to allow the hospital to do so. Joannas parents thing that it is only because he will not inherit Joannas huge estate unless he has been married to her for more than two years. The court sided with Bill Spring, and refused to order the removal of life support. The Winters now want to appeal the decision and let Joanna die in peace before bill becomes Joannas heir.1.Do previous requests with regards to final wishes change when married? Remove from life support request considered a last will and testament? Acting in the best interest of patient . Scenario TwoShirley Baker is a young woman suffering from breast cancer. She has been on chemotherapy for several months, and has experienced terrible side-effects. She did receive a prescription for the medicinal use of marijuana while living in California, but moved to Oklahoma to be closer to her family. She did take several ounces of marijuana with her when she moved, and was arrested while smoking marijuana on the front porch of her parents home, the evening she arrived in Oklahoma. She was convicted of illegal possession of the drug, and wants to appeal her conviction.1. Does Oklahoma recognize medical marijuana? Does Californias prescription law carry over to Oklahoma?Scenario ThreeJoe Valle and Fred Hamper have been partners for many years. When same sex unions became legal in California, they moved there just long enough to be married, and then returned to their home in Georgia. Joe applied for health insurance for himself and his spouse. The insurance company refused to recognize the marriage, and Joe and Fred sued. The trial court found in favor of Big Time Insurance Company, and Joe and Fred want to appeal. For this case, due to limited access, I used Maryland in place of Georgia as they do not allow same sex marriages. 1. Does Georgia recognize marriages performed in other jurisdictions?2. Are same sex marriages recognized by the state? ( I searched Loislaw for same sex marriage doing a power search with only bar publications and other selected as libraries)3.1 95 Op. Att'y Gen. 3 (2010)3.2 Yes3.3 No the state works under comity or the recognition of other jurisdictions laws. It has recognized common law marriage, a marriage between and uncle and niece, both of which are not legal marriages in Maryland due to this.3.4 These are all opinions of the Attorney General of Maryland and are secondary. The opinion also states:There are no formal prerequisites to recognition of an out-of-state marriage. Maryland courts observe "the general rule that a ma rriage valid where contracted or solemnized is valid everywhere, unless it is contrary to the public policy of the forum." Henderson, 199 Md. at 458Scenario FourFlora Findley loves plants. She had become interested in hydroponics and hybridizing plants. She began growing plants under full-spectrum sunlight lamps in her home. She also has a teenaged son who expressed an interest in growing plants. She was pleased that she and her son could share an interest. One day, a police officer investigating a burglary next door, came to Floras home to ask if she had seen anything. He noticed all of the plants growing under the lamps, and quickly began inspecting them. He found a small plant that he thought was marijuana, and promptly arrested Flora. Flora was convicted for possession, but insisted that the search of her home was unwarranted. She wants to appeal the decision.Did flora let the officer in? Does growing plants constitute reasonable suspicion? Was the plant in plain sight?Scenario FiveMr. Frank Incense was arrested for theft when he took $500,000 worth of tools from behind a neighbors shed which faced an alley. Frank insisted that he thought the tools were being thrown away. He was having financial difficulty and thought he could make some money by selling the tools. While being questioned, Frank asked for an attorney. Finally he was provided with an attorney who specialized in Bankruptcy Law, and who was required to take on criminal cases pro bono. The attorney really did not understand criminal procedure, and as a result, Mr. Insence was not only found guilty, but also received a very stiff sentence. Mr. Insence wants to appeal his case because he believes that he not only had a right to counsel, but a right to counsel who was competent in handling criminal proceedings.Did Incense receive competent counsel? Answers: Scenario One The search query in the present case is if the last wishes of Joanna Spring can be fulfilled, particularly in view of the fact that her husband is not willing to acknowledge these wishes. On the other hand, the parents of Joanna believe that Bill Spring is interested in keeping Joanna alive due to the reason that there is a clause according to which Bill will not be able to inherit Joana's estate unless he's been married to Joanna for two years. As the first searches were not successful, the legal issue had to be redefined. A living will allows a person to put into writing division is also a person regarding medical treatment for the end of life of such a person in case the person is not capable of communicating these which is directly. This document has been given different names in different States. However, regardless of the name of such a document, the purpose of this document is to guide the family and the doctors in making a decision regarding the use of medical treatment for the person at the end of life (Leahman, 2004). There are several cases in which the legal right provided by the Constitution to accept or refuse treatment has been acknowledged. It needs to be noted in this regard that there are certain events in case of which, the current last will of a person automatically changes. These events are managed, divorced and having children. Therefore, keeping in view this position of law, it can be said that the previous requests regarding final wishes also change after marriage. In this regard , it is also important to act in the best interest of the patient. Winters can appeal the decision on the ground that Joanna should be allowed to die in piece and should not be made to wait for two years so that Bill can inherit her estate. Scenario Two The search query in this case is if the medical prescription received by Shirley Baker in California is valid in Oklahoma or not. The first searches were successful in this case. Shirley had a medical prescription for marijuana in California but she decided to move to Oklahoma. However she was rested in Oklahoma for smoking marijuana. Therefore the question arises if California's prescription law can also be considered as applicable in Oklahoma. In order to decide this question first of all it needs to be decided if medical marijuana is recognized in Oklahoma. It needs to be noted in this regard that Oklahoma does not recognize medical marijuana. Therefore while going to other states, medical marijuana patients may face difficulties because there are many states that do not allow bringing their medical marijuana. As a result, if medical marijuana laws are not applicable in a particular State, the person can be arrested under possession laws. The situation remains the same even if the patient has been registered in his or her home State. On the basis of this discussion, it can be said that in the present case, California's prescription law is not applicable in Oklahoma because medical marijuana is not recognized in Oklahoma. Scenario Three The search query in the present case is if the same sex marriage between Joe Valle and Fred Hamper can be considered as valid in Georgia. In this case also the first searches were successful. In this regard, the Constitution of George clearly mentions in Article I Section IV that marriage shall be recognized only as the union of man and woman. Therefore, is that takes place between the persons of same sex are prohibited in Georgia. It has also been mentioned that the union between the persons of same sex shall not be recognized by Georgia as being entitled for the benefits of marriage. In this regard it has further been mentioned that your gesture not give effect to any public act, record or proceeding of any other State regarding the relationship between the persons of same that is considered as a managed under the laws of such State. Similarly, it has also been mentioned that the courts of Georgia will have no jurisdiction to grant a divorce or separate maintenance regarding any su ch relationship. On the basis of discussion, it can be clearly stated that the trial court appears to be correct when it gave its decision in favor of Big Time Insurance Company. Scenario Four The search query in this case is if the search conducted by the police officer is valid or not. The first searches were successful and relevant results were obtained. The most relevant result was the case of Horton v. California. In this regard, it can be claimed by Flora that the search conducted by the police officer had violated the ban imposed by the Fourth Amendment on unreasonable searches and seizures (United States v. Gray). However, it is not likely that Flora will be successful in this plea. The reason is that the police officer had visited the place in order to investigate another kind that has taken place in a nearby house. As a result, it can be said that the police officer was lawfully present there and the plants were in plain view (Cervantes, 2001). As a result, the police officer saw the plants. In this regard the doctrine of plain view that was propounded by the court in Horton v. California, 496 U.S. 128 (1990), an item can be seized by the police officer that is i n plain view and the criminal nature of that particular item is apparent immediately. The only requirement prescribed in this regard is that the officer should be lawfully present in the place where he saw the item (Minnesota v. Dickerson). As a result, in the present case is the police officer was capable of immediately telling that the item was probably marijuana and the plants could have been seen by the officer in plain view, it is likely that the search and seizure made by such officer will stand upon in an appeal preferred by Flora. Scenario Five The search query in the present case is if Mr. Incense has received inefficient assistance from his counsel. In this case also the first searches were successful and therefore there was no need to redefine the legal question. In Strickland v Washington, the United States Supreme Court provided the test that can be used for deciding ineffective assistance of the Counsel (Rigg, 2007). Therefore, for the purpose of establishing ineffective assistance of the counsel, it is required that Mr. Incense should establish that the performance of the autonomy was below the performance required by an objective standard of reasonableness used in the legal profession (McKay, 2013). At the same time, Mr. Incense is also required to establish that he had suffered a prejudice due to the inefficient counsel. In order to prove this prejudice, it is required that Mr. Incense should show that if these deficiencies would not have been present on part of his counsel, he would have received a different outco me (Kastenberg, 2013). Educational Leadership Strategy and Collaboration †MyAssignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about the Educational Leadership for Strategy and Collaboration. Answer: Introduction Everyday activities require some form of organization or pre-planned duties to be accomplished. The success of investment depends on well-calculated strategies. In a business set up, supervisors and managers cannot risk acting out of impulse since this may endanger the business(Adner, 2012). When all factors are held constant, the decisions made are to ensure set objectives are achieved. This does not rule out the possibility of an eventuality occurring thereby prompting the management to develop different strategies. It is necessary to understand planning processes, which include deliberate strategy, incremental strategy, and emergent strategy since they are used to secure the objectives of an institution. The deliberate strategy is a formal strategic planning process. It is rational since it evaluates strategic choices, alternatives and current position analysis. It involves other planning techniques like SWOT analysis(Betts, 2014, p. 45). The deliberate strategy is, therefore, the blueprint that formal businesses have to clearly show how they would achieve their objectives. The incremental strategy involves making small changes gradually over time to an already existing strategy. It is aimed at keeping the entity afloat and takes care of the small organizational and environmental changes the organization is operating in. Emergent strategy is an urgent plan used in response to unforeseen situation demanding an immediate action(Steiner, 2014). Organizations may develop new strategies to respond to unexpected opportunities. These strategies may not have been captured in the initial formal plan. A strategy is a model of organized activities especially in an organization that has been planned to achieve some given objectives. Some strategies could be short term or long term. Strategic plans for companies could be covering ten or more years in the future (Steiner, 2015). Some scholars have defined strategy as a pattern of activities adapted to organizations' operations, scope and resources that seek to achieve given objectives (Dransfield Needham, 2014, p. 77) Johnson and Scholes have brought in another view of strategy development as they have broadened it in three different ways. In their approach, they have employed the use of the term strategy lenses to describe strategy development. In their words, strategy is viewed as an experience, a design and ideas (Whittington, et al., 2013, p. 88) The experiences received in the past are taken as the guide for the future plans since the past failures and successes will influence the future strategies. Organizations decisions will be determined by their past experiences of the senior management. In this lens, precedence set will influence the future decisions (Freedman, 2013). Analysis of the current environment of operation has little influence over decisions made. This strategy relies heavily on assumptions in coming up with strategies. It is run by the senior management who stick to the culture of the entity. Strategy as design This approach views strategy development as a design. It asserts that strategy development is a logical process. The opportunities and constraints of an entity are carefully determined through analytical and evaluative techniques e.g. the SWOT analysis. After considering the forces that influence the organization, a strategic plan is established (Jackson, 2014, p. 56) This perspective considers strategy as a carefully thought out plan, a result of logical and analytical planning. The strategy is therefore planned at the senior managerial level then trickle down to the lower hierarchical levels, after which it is implemented. Viewed in its totality, it is similar to the deliberate planning process. This lens, suggests that strategies should be established after evaluating the available resources, the environment of operation visa viz the objectives of the entity. This design is spearheaded by the top management in the organization. This lens views strategy development as innovation and a result of the diversity of ideas. This approach emphasizes the need for promoting diversity in organizations. This will largely lead to a generation of new and diverse ideas. This view is fundamental since the people involved in the day to day running of the organization will have an opportunity to table their ideas(Ngeleza, 2012). This arrests the view that new ideas are not often generated by the senior management. Since people who carry out their jobs every day meet challenges in their line of duty, the dynamism in the environment is best understood by them. They are of help in coming up with original ideas that shall help deal with their immediate responsibilities. This approach relies on radical new ideas that come from people who bear responsibility in the organization. They all compete for the support of the management, this makes individuals come up with well thought out ideas that will win the confidence of the managerial staff who will finally see it implemented(Steiner, 2015). Strategy as a discourse This lens views strategy in terms of communication. The language is seen as a resource used by executives to shape strategic analysis to their personal views. It enables managers to develop and sustain the power that establishes their legitimacy. In this, they gain influence. Kind of planning has its own shortcomings. According to Steiner, (2015), this design is inaccurate as top-level management are not in touch with the daily developments. The general landscape of business and the environment of operation is dynamic. Whereas it may serve as to caution against losses based on managers past experiences, there are chances that changes which occur often in the business environment may have slipped their attention. Sticking to this strategy may disastrous. Developments that require the drastic change in strategies may remain unaddressed since the organization is not flexible to accommodate new strategies. This model, therefore, makes the management to be rigid and very conservative. The decisions are made with little reference to evaluating the current business environment and analyzing the company's, resources. Strategy as experience is embedded with the risk of failing to act and adjust according to environmental changes since strategies are based on past experiences. In view of strategy as ideas, everyone in the organization has an opportunity to air his ideas, in the event that managers have their favorite colleagues; the organization may easily be swayed in a given school of thought. This can disadvantage the organization especially if the same has come from one who is not professionally trained in the given field of concern. Supremacy battles can be waged between employees as everyone would be lobbying for their favorite theory to win the managerial confidence. This will affect the unity of the organization (Dransfield, 2012) Some ideas that emerge from the propagators may not have the adequate scholarly back up as some may be limited to a company's operation. This makes it difficult for an authoritative scientific analysis. It may result in trial and error of ideas. Strategy as a design is a rigid strategy to well-structured hierarchical organizations. In entities where the senior managers do not give instructions to employees, this design will not achieve the set objectives, given that the executive develops and follow it to its implementation. Conclusion Organizations are dynamic entities. Studies show that companies that plan are more successful than those that dont plan. In relation to the three lenses of strategy development, for the management to realize the set objectives, a clear-cut model has to be established. The pattern of activities adapted to organizations resources and operations is necessary. Strategies focus the organizations to look ahead as it provides direction. It is evident that no single strategy will guarantee success. It is prudent for organizations to blend the three strategic lenses in developing plans. Strategy as a design, when well thought out and implemented should form the backbone of our strategies as we use the other models to blend and come up with a super strategy.
